Joseph Furphy, the writer, was born at Yering, near Yarra Glen. He is best known for Such is life (1903) published under the pen-name 'Tom Collins'. Victor Kennedy, born at Eaglehawk, Victoria, in 1895, held various journalistic positions in country towns throughout Australia before becoming a sub-editor with the Melbourne Argus.
